"Horse", Talking Stick Festival, Vancouver BC 2007
Text of this performance can be found here.
"Horse" is an historical re-imagining of the West told with voice, drum, video and cello (Cris Derksen). Originally written and performed for the 2001 Longest Night Festival in Whitehorse, Horse has transformed into a New Media performance with the development of a "digital drum", a hand drum with a "forward-engineered" laptop inside, which played video.
This contraption is currently under further development to rectify two problems, the first being it's tendency to crash when played hard (despite having the hard drive in an external case in my pocket), and the second having no way to time the video to the performance (in the performance clip as you will see the video end before the piece is finished). Version 2.0 of this drum will feature a triggering mechanism that will allow me to cross fade individual video clips in time to the actual delivery of the text/music. This device will be functional in the fall of 2007.
Horse is currently available as a touring performance. This version of Horse premiered at the 2007 International Festival of Animated Objects in Calgary, and was also performed at AKA Gallery, Saskatoon, in January 2007.
